Two weekends bookend a range of around 120 individual events in the program page.

Make the memorable journey this winter to Warwick’s Jumpers and Jazz in July – Queensland’s quirkiest Winter festival!

A kaleidoscope of yarn-bombed colour, vibrant jazz, great food, wine and coffee, crisp frosty mornings and soul-warming sunny days with brilliant blue skies – expect this and more over 10 big days at Jumpers and Jazz in July.

Each year the JJJ committee are thrilled to be able to offer a wide range of activities and events across the 10 days of the festival thanks to local businesses, clubs and organisations who host a selection of private ticketed events to add to the program. Small galleries exhibiting fibre arts, dinners with live music and entertainment, workshops, steam train trips, children’s activities, Town Crier walks & talks through the CBD as well as guided Tree Jumper Tours with the Art Gallery Director (and much more) will be on the program. The CBD events are all set against early historic architecture including the gracious sandstone Town Hall and Post Office- also yarn bombed for your pleasure!

Local businesses welcome all festival goers and offer unique retail outlets for the discerning shopper, wonderful country hospitality at many and varied café’s & restaurants - from casual al fresco to wining and dining with live jazz.

Gee, the question of how to number these. Should we use the Greek Alphabet like it was used for Covid Delta variant; except they skipped Xi and went to Omicron; maybe the Chinese leader's name was too similar. Should we use Arabic (yes, we say English) ABC, or ancient Arabic numerals 1,2,3, or use Roman numerals of i, ii, iii, iv, v, or something from India or Africa? Well, 1,2,3 seems good to me! The modern English usage of 1,2,3 does also have the first number of zero, which the ancient Arabs did not seem to discover or did not seem to think might be useful. The northern Indian Vedic people did seem to use zero.

We have wanted to bring JJJ as a front cover for a few years, especially as one of our staff had completed their festivals assignment at university based on Jumpers n Jazz in July.

St Mark’s Anglican Church will have the church bell-tower decorated with handmade flowers for the JJJ festival. The Women’s Guild is contemplating having some 1,400 knitted flowers in different sizes and colours.

Pocket Books 30th edition

Yes, Pocket Books has been in Warwick and the Southern Downs since 1991, and bringing you the thirtieth print edition this year, and our 16th year of being online. Of course, printing has been around since Johannes Gutenberg in Germany invented printing in about 1450. World Wide Web (also known as www or online) has been invented by a British scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. Originally it was developed for sharing information between scientists and universities. It became a progressively widely used tool for sharing information once Google developed its search engine in 1998; only 24 years ago. Pocket Books has utilised this new platform since 2004.

During these 30 years Pocket Books has produced Pocket Books for numerous areas including Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Caboolture, Bribie Island, Redcliffe, Goondiwindi, and some interstate towns like Bacchus Marsh. All some 180 various editions, with some four million books, have been printed in Australia. Pocket Books is an Australian owned firm, started and owned by Gerard and Nevenka Clarke.

Over three decades, Warwick has benefited from having Pocket Books. Many firms obtain much of their business from their advertising with us. Most local emergency services have Pocket Books in their offices and vehicles. Pocket Books receives no government grants; all revenue is purely from the advertising of our clients.

See pocketbooks.com.au or see PBezy.com.au on your computer or mobile phone. Many locals make these ‘favourites’ on their devices.

In line with our online presence, Pocket Books also produce detailed Web Profiles. Online with pocketbooks.com.au, for examples please use the Search Box for J Bulmer to see his PB web profile. We write these, upload & maintain them, while our PB in-house web-master provides search keywords for various search engines so that we usually appear on page one of search results. Also see Complete Dentistry, ABSQ Accounting. Discuss if we could provide this web-profile service to yourself and for some of your clients. Our PB web profiles can be up online within a few days.

Hidden Thorns

On a much more realistic and sad thought. While phoning firms for their information for this edition, I spoke with Marie-Rose Fox, who has retired to Warwick. In 2007, her only child, Michelle, then 28, was murdered on the Gold Coast. She wrote a 153 page book, “Hidden Thorns”, about her daughter's story and about her religious thoughts. If you wish to buy a book, phone 0402 007 019 or see hiddenthorns.com.au website.

Kind regards
Gerry Clarke
