The Bombora Outriggers combine community and fitness
with their exciting fleet of six boats plying the Passage on most
evenings and weekends.
Roz Fritz started this Bribie club on 7th February 2017. She had
moved down from Gladstone where she had enjoyed outrigging since 2003.
Bombora Outriggers has six boats, including two six-person, one
treble, one double, and a quadruple outrigger twin. The main photos are
enjoyment on the water. The land photo happily shows all six, while
awaiting permission to build a shed.
After three years as a President and a Secretary creating the
club, Roz has asked Jim Fogarty to take over, with him being elected
President by the 48 members for 2021.
The photo of the six was taken by Jenny Easey. The photo of
BOMBORA was taken by Marianne Neale, who is also a member of the Dragon
Abreast Club, which also helps breast cancer survivors. The
“land’ photo was taken by Nevenka Clarke from our own
Pocket Books office.
As well as The Bombora Outriggers and Dragon Abreast, there is
the Mahalo Outriggers on Bribie Island. As Roz has said “My heart
swells each time I see outriggers on the water. I wanted more people to
know the joy of paddling.
Roz’s love of the sea could well have come from her
father, Ron Harris, who, at 98 years young is one of only five
surviving world war two veterans in Queensland, having being a captain
of Sunderland flying boats in England. Ron Harris has been also
privileged with a friendship with the Queensland Governor H.E. Paul de
Jersey AC and Mrs Kaye de Jersey.
Join the fun, contact Jim Fogarty on 0424 252 814. Jim is a
retired engineer. His email: jim.1021@hotmail.com The boats are usually
at the edge of the park in Welsby Pde, near the propeller (Air Force
monument), off Creel Bend, where this canal meets the Pumicestone
Passage on map 432 G1.
