The banked-up line of cars on High St outside the Showgrounds proved that Snowflakes is drawing large numbers of visitors to Stanthorpe.

Held on the first weekend of July, the Granite Belt is cold enough for real snow. In case the snow hasn’t quite arrived, a machine makes a hundred tons for the interim.

The 2016 Snowflakes were the same 2nd July weekend as the Federal Election. The 2017 Snowflakes will be Friday 30th June from 8am till Sunday 2nd July 2017 ending at 5pm.

While in town for the Sunday and Monday, I found the 2016 Snowflakes in Stanthorpe were suitably cold, but, at many stages, attractively sunny.

The snowflake cupcakes were provided at the St Josephs Parents & Friends stall on Friday.

Fireworks from Saturday Night.

Making a snowman is a rare treat for Queenslanders.

Some of the crowd were enjoying the music of the String Family on Friday afternoon.

Throwing snowballs. That feeling of a snowstorm.

Children could experience a real winter in the Snowglobe.

Indoor ice-skating, with a few model penguins. The children can almost be heard quoting the Snowflakes slogan of “It’s snow much fun!”. Ice-skates getting real use, with child’s use of an Ice Pal stability scooter.

Hat on head, hand on head, elbow raised, and, delightful smiles, as the snowflakes create ‘snowing’.

Our thanks to Glenda Riley for the photos, and to Nicola Holly from the Stanthorpe Library, ph 4681 1874, for her valuable advice.
